Brief History of Hunting in Patagonia

While Argentina’s hunting history dates back hundreds of years, over the last 30 years it has grown into a highly sought after destination for hunters from all over the world. It began with the prolific dove hunting, but now includes big game species as well – with one of the most desirable being the Red Stag.

In the enchanting landscapes of Patagonia, a region that has captivated the world's imagination, the Red Stag was introduced in the early 1920s. Today, Patagonia is recognized as having some of the largest free range red stags in the world. These magnificent creatures, strategically placed for hunting, now offer a unique and alluring experience hunting these impressive animals in an unbeatable location.

The Untamed Beauty of Patagonia

Patagonia is situated at the southern extremity of South America, and its governance is shared between Argentina and Chile. While 90% of the region falls under Argentina's jurisdiction, the remaining 10% is a part of Chile's territory. The northwestern region of Patagonia offers a prime hunting ground for red stag. The area’s mountainous terrain and cool, arid climate allows the red stag to thrive, and offers a challenging physical hunt to those looking for adventure. Precipitation is seasonal, and it is advisable to keep track of the weather forecast before planning your trip to ensure adequate preparation.

The red stag, which ranks as the fourth-largest deer on earth, is a highly sought-after game animal due to its impressive size and large antlers. While some antlers can have as many as 18 points, the average is around 12.

The red stag population in Patagonia is thriving, with thousands of these animals roaming free throughout the year. The recommended hunting season is during the rutting season, roughly mid-March to mid-April. During this time, the stags and hinds begin the “brama,” which is the Argentine word for the roar. The red stag roar is a powerful bellow that can be heard for miles and serves to attract the hinds

Our hunting takes place on 25,000 acres of private land that consistently produces red stag trophies in the 300-320 SCI class. The stags in Patagonia are beautiful, typically having dark horns and light ivory tips.

The hunting of red stag is typically done using 4 wheelers for access and then spot and stalk methods, with average shots being between 100 and 200 yards.
